- [Amazing Process] Cool to the touch and smooth, Soapstone (kisii stone) is quarried and brought to the surface by hand. Master Carvers creates the precise shape, using hand tools. The stone is first cut using a hand saw, a "panga" (large broad-bladed knife) and "adze" (hoe), then reduced to the required basic shape using various sizes of "kisu" (knife). Women use sandpaper with water to get the smooth finish. Kisii "Chora" (Artists) create the design using water based dyes, and a knife to etch the details of the design.
