Customer Reviews

Totally Disappointed This was a total waste of money and doesn't even deserve a one star, but I have to give it one in order to post this The mandolin (slicer) is so weak and poorly made that I couldn't even slice a sweet potato or a bosc pear. Although I managed to slice all the potatoes evenly and at the right thickness by hand, when I microwaved them on the the rubber tool, the ones on the outside burnt and the ones on the inside didn't cook. I would send it back except I don't want to spend anymore money for this on shipping. Totally disappointed and useless. 1Great for tostado/taco shells and chips I bought the chip maker to make healthy potato chips. I tried using white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and beets. It took a lot of microwaving to get the chips crisp and they shrank, so were tiny. All in all, not worth the effort and cost of the energy to do all that microwaving--so took off one star. However, I decided to try it with corn tortillas and was amazed at how good they turned out. I spread just a couple of drops of olive oil on the tortillas, then microwaved on high 55 sec. Opened the door to let the steam out, then lowered the power to 50% and microwaved for another 50 sec. -- ( microwaves vary, so experiment with your own unit). You can season the tortilla mid way thru and break up into chips, also. Everyone I've served these chips and shells to love them and prefer them over packaged product--and they are a much healthier choice. 4Makes great chips but check regularly while cooking The mandolin works fine for potatoes (be extra careful with a mandolin since my wife sliced her finger on it) and the cooking disc is okay, although small. Plan on cooking 3+ batches to bake all the slices from one small potato. Even though my microwave tray rotates, the cooking is not uniform across the Mastrad cooking disc. Set the time for 3 minutes, remove the almost burned chips, then cook the remaining partly done chips for another minute. I put garlic salt on the chips before baking and the chips were delicious. You'll eat an entire batch before the next batch is cooked. 4The concept is nice, but doesn't make enough to warrant the trouble! I like the idea of being able to use fresh fruit and vegetables without all the fatty oils and sodium you find in bagged items, but i found it to be a lot of trouble for the small amount of chips that fit on the tray - you'd have to keep filling it up and cooking them each time to get enough for anyone with a family to enjoy, and I read that you need to let the tray cool off before you can use it again or it might melt. It's a lot easier to put a tray full of sliced potatoes on a cookie sheet and pop it in the oven, then you don't need to keep messing with it. The one thing I do like is the mandolin that comes in the set, but I wouldn't purchase this product again. 3Really cool! I saw this on Dr. Oz. I figured that it was too good to be true. I tried it out, and it works! You need to be sure that your chips are roughly the same size (don't have ones that are half the size as others). The smaller chips will cook faster than the bigger chips. And I'm glad that I got the slicer since it makes life a whole lot easier than trying to get the correct thick/thinness.This is something that you do not want to set and forget. I would suggest microwave supervision even during the first 3 minutes.I did not have a problem with soggy chips, but I do have a problem with salting the chips after they have been cooked (the salt won't stick).I am going to try lightly sprinkling the chips pre-cooking and see what happens. It's a lot of work, but at least I don't have to worry about oil and added fat.I think I'll try not skinning the potatoes next time too. 5Best thing since sliced bread I first saw this at my cousin's house. Then I had to have one of my own. I absolutely love it. You may have to experiment with times and not go strictly by suggested times that come with the product. I like just plain potatoes and have also used the flavored popcorn salts to flavor my chips. The directions say to flavor the chips after you make them but I done it before hand and it worked great. I would definately recommend this. 5Don't even bother! Don't even bother. It worked great for 3 or 4 batches, then it melted . If was worth the time I would return it. Total disappointment . 1Move along. Nothing to see here. It's essentially a waste of time. It's just too fussy. If you just use it as you'd expect you'll get tiny, shriveled up, rather damp chips. Maybe a dozen if you're lucky. If you take the time to dry the slices in paper towels before nuking them, you'll get maybe a dozen chips that are marginally better. And if you're doing this for two or more people it's going to take half a day, generate a lot of waste (starch-laden, wet paper towels), and quickly becomes an onerous task. I know: I've done it -- once. Never again.Just buy baked chips and pass on this thing. It's a great idea, but there's no way it can justify its cost. 2Great gadget! Nice item! This does make chips in the microwave and does a very good job of it, too!I've used it a couple of times and like the results. Since I cook for two I bought two sets--partly because I LOVE a good slicer and partly because I wanted two trays. One tray makes plenty for any reasonable person to eat as a side or a snack so I disagree with the person who says it doesn't make enough. I think it made PLENTY of chips to go with my sandwich!I plan on using it many times. 5Mind blowing and life-changing for me! This is seriously life-changing for me. For a gal who loves potato chips but is watching her diet this is a miracle gadget for me. Less than five minutes I've got fresh chips, no fat, no preservatives. This is definitely one of the best Amazon purchases I've ever made, and I've made a lot of them. I highly recommend this product for anyone who is watching their weight or just wants to eat healthier but misses chips. Bye-bye baked Lays there's a new chip in my house. 5
